The English Faculty at Royton & Crompton School is one of seven major faculty areas within the school. It is staffed by a team of very committed staff who work hard to support the faculty in particular and the school in general.
The faculty has nine classrooms and separate work areas for the members of the team. Each classroom is equipped with a variety of audio/visual resources, and data projectors. Two well-stocked cupboards contain a range of texts to support teaching and learning at both key stages. The faculty has access to a set of laptops and regularly uses the Learning Resource Centre for English lessons. In addition, there is a dedicated Drama Studio.
There are thirteen full time English teachers, teaching across both key stages. Most English teachers will also teach a number of Key Stage 3 Drama classes, with some members of the team working with Drama groups at Key Stage 4. The faculty is supported by a Curriculum Assistant, who deals with administration, a Learning Supervisor and a Teaching Assistant.
KS4
At Key Stage 4, all pupils follow the AQA Specification A for GCSE English. The majority of pupils are also entered for GCSE English Literature. The English Faculty has a policy of entering all pupils for GCSE English, although some pupils may also study the Entry-Level Certificate offered by AQA. Since 2005, the English Faculty has entered pupils for GCSE English in the November of Year 11. This enables pupils to re-enter in the June series if they fail to meet their baseline targets. In addition, pupils are able to study GCSE Drama and BTEC Performing Arts as options at Key Stage 4. As part of the English curriculum, pupils are taught Functional Literacy.
KS3
At Key Stage 3, pupils follow a common scheme of work, involving study of a range of non-fiction, media, prose, drama and poetry texts. Pupils are also taught Functional Literacy within the English curriculum. In Year 9, all pupils are expected to take the KS3 National Tests. This invovlves assessment in reading, writing and study of a Shakespeare play (The Tempest - 2009). All pupils in Year 7 and 8 have an additional lesson of Drama, with some pupils chossing to pursue this Year 9.
