Subject Philosophy

Design and Technology is an innovative, rigorous and practically accessible subject. Using creativity and imagination, you will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering your own and others' needs, wants and values.

We aim to prepare you to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. Creative thinking encourages you to make positive changes to your quality of life and the life of others. The subject will stimulate you to become an autonomous and creative problem-solver, both as an individual and as part of a team. It enables you to identify needs and opportunities and to respond by developing ideas and making products through a variety of techniques, materials and processes.

The Design Technology Department

There are 3 members of staff in our Design Technology department, who have a broad range of experiences and expertise.

Key Stage 3

You will start along the path of becoming an innovator and creative problem solver by experiencing a range of subject specific areas such as:

  • Graphic Products
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM)
  • Electronics
  • Product Design
    You will be encouraged to think about form, function, materials, safety and develop high quality making outcomes using a range of tools and equipment that the department has.

 

Key Stage 4

BTEC Engineering gives learners the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the engineering sector & develop a range of personal skills and techniques, through the selection of optional generic units that are essential for successful performance in working life.

Students will undertake four units: three internally assessed units and one Externally Assessed Examination.

Opportunities: Gives learners the opportunity to enter potential employment within a wide range of engineering sectors such as mechanical, automotive and electrical.
