Subject Philosophy

Food is ever changing and learning to cook is an essential life skill. During the course of this subject many life skills are developed to help to support pupils. Pupils will discover how to prepare, cook and source food giving them essential life skills. They will also develop the skills of team work and cooperation during the course of their studies. We are a highly ambitious department which encourages pupils to think and work independently to ensure they achieve their potential. We aim to inspire pupils to develop their skills for life.

Food Technology Curriculum

Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 curriculum has been designed to introduce pupils to the understanding of food preparation, different cooking methods and understanding where food comes from. It links skills and knowledge required for the Key Stage 4 and provides pupils with a general understanding of nutrition and how to prepare, cook and eat a healthy balanced diet.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, pupils have the option of studying either the Educas GCSE course in Food Preparation and Nutrition or the Educas Level 1 or 2 course in Hospitality and Catering. Both these courses are recognised by catering colleges and are a good introduction for study at a higher level.

The GCSE equips pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. It encourages learners to cook, enables them to make informed decisions about food and nutrition and allows them to acquire knowledge in order to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life.

The Level 1 & 2 course is a Vocational Award enabling learners to gain knowledge, understanding and skills relating to a specific vocational sector. In addition to development sector specific knowledge and understanding, these qualifications also support learners to develop the essential employability skills that are valued by employers, further and higher education.
